Maya Modeling FAQ

How do I enter?

To take part, the first thing you'll need to do is to read this month's creative brief. Then, use the month to model from your interpretation of the brief. Finally, submit a render of your model to the site before the end of the month. To get the most out of the competition, use the "Work in Progress" forum throughout the month to get feedback on your work. The feedback you get from your peers will make your work that much stronger!

What is the Maya Modeling Competition?

Maya modeling runs a monthly modeling competition. Modelers from all over the world participate, everyone models after a creative brief provided by Maya Modeling. During the competition, participants can share their progress with each other and critique each others' work. At the end of the month, a winner is chosen. The idea is to give modelers a chance to practice their skills and build up their reels in a fun, challenging environment

How about texturing and animating my model? Can I do that?

People looking at your work will be focusing on you modeling skills, everything else is not as important, but if you want to texture your piece you are welcome to do so. Even though it’s not necessary.

If I use 3ds max or XSI can I still enter even though I don’t use Maya?

Anyone is welcome to enter the competition, using any software. As long as you have done the model yourself. Obviously poser models and any other pre made models are not legitimate to use.

Can I post process or compose images in 2d programs such as Photoshop?

Yes you can. As long as the main model was made with a 3d package.

What formats should my render and thumbnail be in?

  • Images for the entries should be at least 400 * 300 (or equivalent) and less than 1024 * 768 (or equivalent). The recommended size is between 640 *480 and 800 * 600.
  • They must be in the JPEG file format (with a .jpg extension). Do not zip them!
  • Image files sizes must be under 150 KB (= 150,000 bytes).
  • Provide your personal details in a mail when you upload the images.
